Dr. Mike’s Philosophy of Supplements

We hear a lot from our clients about how to incorporate supplements into their routine.

While in an ideal world it would be wonderful if you got all of your vitamins and minerals from food and proper hydration, that is not realistic for most. Instead, I recommend you use supplements to help build a strong nutritional platform combined with a healthy diet and proper hydration.

Here are some things to consider when you want to add supplements to your health regime.

Do you need supplements?

If you are healthy and eat a wide variety of food including fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meat and fish, legumes then you probably do not need to take supplements

BUT if you are any of the following, then you probably need to consider adding supplements
to your diet:

  • Limited or restricted diet - Keto, vegan, vegetarian, Atkins etc

  • Don’t eat 2-3 servings a week of seafood

  • Limited dairy intake due to lactose intolerance, allergies or other reasons

  • Have a medical condition that can affect how your body absorbs or uses nutrients like Crohn’s or celiac disease

  • Other allergy or illness that prevents consumption of a variety of nutrients

What should I consider when adding a supplement to my diet?

First and foremost, talk to your doctor or dietician before making any changes to your diet. Along with their input you need to make sure you adhere to these guidelines:

Do you need the nutrient(s) found in the supplement?Take stock of your diet and what you might be lacking and make sure your supplement meets your needs. It can be just as bad, if not worse, to take too much of something, as it is to not get enough of a nutrient

Your primary care physician can run a blood panel test to see if you have any deficiencies

Read the labelNot all supplements are made the same and some may sneak in unhealthy or unsafe ingredients. Make sure you read the label carefully

Here are some dangerous ingredients to look out for:

  • Aconite

  • Caffeine Powder

  • Chaparral

  • Coltsfoot

  • Comfrey

  • Germander

  • Greater Celandine

  • Green Tea Extract

  • Kava

  • Lobelia

  • Methylsynephrine

  • Pennyroyal Oil

  • Red Yeast Rice

  • Usnic Acid

  • Yohimbe

Watch your dietAdding a supplement means you are adding certain nutrients to your diet. Any major changes to your diet can mean you are getting too much or too little of a nutrient, which can be dangerous

As with any change to your health, consulting with a health professional is your first step.

Something I have added to my regime is the essential nutrition pack from Anabolic Laboratories. It allows you to provide these important nutritional supplements manufactured at a higher quality, packaged more conveniently and at an economic price.
