KNEE & LEG

Knee and leg pain can often result from overuse and misalignment.

When even the simplest tasks are difficult because of pain in your knees or legs, life can seem unmanageable. But you don’t have to decide between living with pain, stopping activities, or taking medication as your only option. Chiropractic care can help. Manipulation and mobilization techniques, as well as soft tissue massage and gentle stretching and strengthening exercises, can improve range of motion and reduce pain.

ILIOTIBIAL BAND SYNDROME

Iliotibial (IT) Band Syndrome is a common injury for runners, cyclists, or people who are active in repetitive aerobic activities.

A band of fibrous tissue that runs downs the outside of the thigh, the iliotibial band provides stability to the knee and the hip and helps prevent dislocation of these joints.

Pain in this area can arise when the tissue of this band overdevelops, tightens, and rubs across the hipbone or the outer part of the knee. A common symptom includes pain on the outside of the knee or hip, which can disrupt your daily routine or training regimen.

Often, patients are compensating for misalignment in the spine, putting undue stress on a hip or leg. Consequential pain develops from this unnatural function.

If you are feeling any pain around the knee or hip area, schedule an appointment so we can assist you and work to alleviate the pain as well as to heal your injury.

KNEE AND LEG PAIN

Knee pain can be a chronic nuisance if its cause is not properly identified. Often the root of the problem involves adjoining body parts.

The knee is the largest joint in the body, and it absorbs a lot of shock and stress from the legs, along with the hips and back. All of these lower body parts function in concert with one another, and pain in one area can be a result of injury or overuse of a different area.

Alternatively, knee pain could be a result of degenerative conditions such as arthritis or osteoporosis, with symptoms that become more acute with age. A full analysis of your gait and pain experience is necessary to determine the root cause of the problem.

Whether your knee pain is from overuse, injury, or progressive disease, strengthening the muscles around the joint is usually the key to treating and preventing the problem, along with determining its cause.

SHIN SPLINTS

There are more than 3 million cases per year of this painful condition, primarily among runners, dancers and athletes.

You may notice shin splints upon increasing your running or walking training distance. What can make you susceptible to the painful inflammation caused by shin splints, or medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS)?

The stress on your shin bones that results in soreness, aching and weakness could be caused by:

  • Misalignment of your spine and lower body which can result in dysfunction of the legs' bones and tissues, such as the shin

  • Improper biomechanics of your legs, knees, ankles and feet which can lead to chronic stress that your lower legs are not able to handle

The pain from stressing the tibia (shin) results from the tearing of its surrounding connective tissue, or even tiny fractures in the bone itself. If such a condition goes untreated, you could be at risk for knee or hip injury.

A combination of therapies may help. An assessment and proper stretching may relieve pain, correct any imbalances and restore proper musculoskeletal function.
